APTIM Environmental, Health and Safety Scientist in San Jose, California

Job Overview:

APTIM is seeking a seasoned mid-level Environmental, Health and Safety Scientist on a full-time basis to participate in a variety of environmental, health, and safety compliance support tasks, such as, injury and illness prevention, lockout/tagout, industrial hygiene, industrial/commercial safety, construction safety, laboratory safety, fire prevention, confined space entry, hazardous waste, hazardous materials surveys, aboveground storage tanks, spill prevention, underground storage tanks, and various DOT, RCRA, OSHA, and EPA compliance activities. The successful candidate should be experienced in supporting an environmental, health, and safety team and is seeking advancement into a project management role. This position is located in San Jose, California and must be remote locally to this vicinity.

This position will consist of a mix of three (3) days per week onsite providing EHS support at a client location, with other client work during the remaining two days either in an office environment or at client facilities. Travel will be mostly within California; however, travel outside California is possible. Experience in asbestos surveys, air monitoring, lead surveys, environmental sampling (groundwater and soil) and mold is a plus. Experience in manufacturing and research and development settings is a plus. A candidate having California Asbestos Inspector accreditation (active license) receives prompt attention/review.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Executing various work scopes, while meeting project schedules and budgets

  • Experience in a Clean Room

  • .High Tech industrial experience

  • Working independently and as part of a project team and be able to adjust to changing conditions.

  • Working as a team member and/or team lead to assist in preparation of regulatory reports and permit applications.

  • Interfacing with client personnel at a facility level.

  • Site sampling (asbestos, lead, mold, air, water, noise, etc.).

  • Perform site assessments/inspections for environmental, health, and safety, up to and including job safety assessments (JSA), laser safety, lockout/tagout evaluations, confined space determinations, and laboratory health and safety audits, hazardous waste audits, stormwater compliance, spill prevention countermeasures and control plans, air emissions, etc.

  • Assisting clients with ISO 14001 and 45001 compliances.

  • Conducting regulatory and statutory reviews for client applicability.

  • Reviewing new and updated regulations, statutes, and legislative bills for applicability for clients.

  • Assist in environmental permit management and application or renewal application processes.

  • Managing time to ensure a quality product is prepared to meet project deadlines.

  • Applying knowledge and skills to a wide range of standard and nonstandard situations.

  • Following defined processes explicitly while also being able to identify and accommodate new or changing scenarios, as well as, developing processes for new activities.

  • Individual should be aware that the field work can be physically challenging and may involve working in industrial settings.

  • Working at heights, and areas of high temperatures are a possibility.

  • Auditing Inspections.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in a core science such as geology, chemistry, physics, biology, or safety/industrial hygiene), engineering, environmental science, or related area required.

  • Related work experience between 5-10 years.

  • Prior experience or training regarding environmental, safety, and health compliance and related federal and state environmental regulations required.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills required. Must have a demonstrated strength and proficiency in Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, SharePoint Online, etc. and the ability to learn other software applications.

  • Willing to work in the field.

  • Must be willing to travel with overnight trips ranging from a few nights up to 4 weeks. Though travel is not consistent.

  • Preferred to have asbestos inspector certification in any state.
